5 Christmas gift ideas for the Powersports lover in your life

December 8, 2017 / by Brooke Bell

Take a look at these 5 Christmas gift ideas that the powersports enthusiast in your life will be sure to appreciate.

With just a few weeks left in the holiday season, you may not know what to get that special person in your life, husband, brother, dad, friend, etc. When you choose a Christmas gift for them, make sure it’s one that celebrates their hobbies and interests. We are here to make the goal of giving them the perfect gift not only possible, but affordable.

It's looking like a good Christmas at the ProX office!

Many of us have a motorcycle or ATV junkie in our lives, or maybe just someone who loves all things with an engine. Sometimes we struggle trying to think of the ideal gift for them during the holidays. Maybe because we don’t understand it, they already have it, or we really don’t know where to find it.

We’ve put together a list of some top gifts for the motorcycle or powersports enthusiast in your life. From connecting rods, to pistons, to chains, and everything in between, we’ve got you covered.

Holiday Gift #1 : Connecting Rods

I know what you are thinking? Connecting Rod? For a gift? Well, there really is nothing like the element of surprise. Most people wouldn’t see this coming, but they sure will be thankful, and here’s why...

The connecting rod, for example, is one of the most tortured components in the engine. It’s compressed for half the combustion cycle and stretched during the other half. Taking a chance on replacing such an essential element of the engine with an inferior part is never in the best interest of a powersports enthusiast, so often the choice is to return to the dealership for an OEM part. However, there is an affordable alternative matching OEM quality.

ProX connecting rods are double forged from Japanese steel, and come with OEM quality bearings, pin, and washers.

Motorcycle and ATV engine builders may sometimes be suspicious of aftermarket replacement parts, especially for the critical rotating assembly. However, cоnnесtіng rоdѕ from PrоX аrе double forged from Japanese steel, exceeding PrоX'ѕ hіgh quality ѕtаndаrdѕ. O.E. ѕресіfісаtіоnѕ аnd tоlеrаnсеѕ аrе meticulously mаіntаіnеd fоr еаѕу іnѕtаllаtіоn аnd smooth реrfоrmаnсе. PrоX cоnnесtіng rоd kіtѕ соmе соmрlеtе wіth the crаnkріn, bіg-end bеаrіng, small end bеаrіng, аnd wаѕhеrѕ.

A connecting rod kit is a great part to have in the garage to be prepared when it’s time for a rebuild. If you know the recipient’s engine has a lot of time on it, they’ll be happy a major component is taken care of.

Holiday Gift #2: Cam Chain

Cam chains are a low cost, critical component of any four-stroke powersports engine.

Holiday gift number two may sound a little bit more familiar. Most of us know what a chain is, and its ability to be found on most anything with a motor. For a little background though, cam chains, or timing chains, are crucial to keeping the camshaft and crankshaft working in precisely timed, perfect harmony in four-stroke engines. The best part about this important piece is that it’s extremely affordable. Even if they don’t need one at this moment, they will need one eventually, and they’ll be thanking you when that day comes.

ProX teamed up with Borg Warner, the main supplier to a variety of OEM companies worldwide, to manufacture a complete line of OEM quality cam chains at a better-than-OEM price.

Please be aware, however, that if the person you’re giving the gift to has a two-stroke engine, cam chains are not present in that motor design.

Holiday Gift #3: Piston Kit

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…5 pistons kits! Okay, that’s not true, but it would be an excellent decision. What benefits do pistons and rings bring to your powersports lover? The piston and rings offer the essential job of providing an airtight seal in the combustion chamber, and compressing the fuel mixture before it’s ignited by the spark plug. Worn out pistons and rings will greatly reduce the overall performance of your powersports engine, and can cause a lot of damage if not inspected and maintained regularly.

ProX 2-stroke pistons are hypereutectic cast aluminum, which have an optimum level of expansion during operation. Read on for more piston details.

With that being said, if you’re trying to figure out how many hours are on your top end because it’s been a while since the last rebuild, it’s most likely time to replace your piston(s) and rings. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your piston and rings every 30-80 hours depending on the type of engine, but under racing conditions, that recommended time is chopped down to every 15 hours. This varies greatly motor-to-motor, so please be aware this a general guideline.

The good news is, we can almost guarantee your loved one will need a piston kit at some point. ProX offers a wide variety of piston kits for both two and four-strokes, for everything ranging from street bikes, to dirt bikes, to snowmobiles.

ProX four stroke pistons are forged or cast depending on the application, and are made on the same tooling and equipment as OEM pistons. Sticking to strict OEM tolerances and materials ensures motors with a new ProX piston will feel like new again.

ProX two-stroke pistons are made from hypereutectic cast aluminum, which provides an optimum range of piston expansion during operation for two-stroke engines. Some ProX pistons come with an OEM style TiN coating to assist in the wearing process, in addition to a friction-reducing skirt coating. All ProX piston kits come with the piston, ring(s), clips, and wrist pin in one box.

ProX offers both 2-stroke and 4-stroke piston kits for everything ranging from dirt bikes, to snowmobiles, to jet skis.

The best part about giving these gifts is not just that they are affordable, but that they are thoughtful. And like any good adrenaline junkie, they can never have enough toys, tools, and parts.

Holiday Gift #4: Valves & Valve Shims

Four-stroke powersports enthusiasts need a variety of valve shims available for when it comes to adjust valves. Valves play a key role in every four-stroke engine’s performance. They allow the fuel and air mixture to come in through the intake valves, they seal compression, and then allow burned gases to escape through the exhaust valves. However, when you’ve spent a season racing motocross, your valves see a great deal of stress, and they will most likely need to be adjusted, or even replaced.

ProX steel valves are manufactured in the same factories as the Japanese OEM manufactures with the same material, so they are a very cost effective OEM replacement. They also improve wear resistance and life-span over some stock titanium counterparts. ProX titanium valves are individually machined from titanium forgings, and they are Chromium Nitride coated to exceed OEM surface hardness and friction resistance. They are a premium choice above OEM parts, as well as a premium choice for your holiday shopping this year.

ProX shim kits are a must-have in the garage of four-stroke riders, and ProX OEM replacement valves will finish the job when valves are beyond the point of adjusting.

Holiday Gift #5: Drive Train

It goes without saying that changing your oil/filter and cleaning your air filter should be part of your regular maintenance and service, which also could be good holiday gift ideas from ProX.

However, there are other key components that have a longer life and don’t require constant attention. One of the first things to check during this off season is your drivetrain.

ProX offers both front and rear sprockets, as well as chains for many motocross applications. The 420 and 520 MX roller chains are both designed for motocross use, and are made in OEM factories in Japan with OEM quality Japanese material. All of the materials used are heat treated to ensure high tensile strength. X-Ring chains are also offered for certain applications, which feature a QX-type seal, resulting in less friction and more durability than a standard MX chain.

ProX chains and sprockets are a step up from OEM, being made from strong Japanese materials and featuring life-lengthening coatings and CNC machined designs.

Those are just a few unique and quality gifts that any powersports lover will enjoy this holiday season. It’s often hard to find the right gift for most people in our lives, especially these motorsport lovers! The problem is, there’s so many intricate details and so much maintenance that goes into powersports parts. The list could go on forever about things they need, have to have, and just simply want. These are just a few ideas we thought anyone who is as passionate about dirt bikes, motorcycles, atvs, etc. as we are, is going to absolutely love. No better way to put a huge smile on their face and yours, without breaking the bank.

Here’s to revving our engines through the holidays and into the New Year.
